Last Day; Snow Day

I thought my last day with the Daily Herald was going to be just another shopping photo shoot. Weather proved me wrong. In no way was I prepared to shoot winter weather photographs. I trekked up this sledding hill (falling two times) and met the King family. When contemplating how to get down off the hill with out falling, the mother suggested just hopping on a sled.

Actually indentifiable

A few weeks ago I had the misfortune to shoot boys' swimming relays. While swimming itself presents enough of a challenge to photograph, relays offer no names to associate with swimmers making captions nearly impossible to write.

My more recent bout of boys' swimming was much better, boys had names and there was a walkable area so I didn't feel like I was going to fall into the pool with any misstep.

I feel like this photo is predictable, but I am glad this event was so much more successful than the last, I don't mind posting it.

A bad case of nostalgia...

This weekend I photographed a number of events taking place at high schools: A military history class, a cooking competition in a Pastry Arts class, my sister's choir concert (which I watched rather than photographed)


Needless to say, it made me reflect fondly on my time in high school and growing up in Chicago and surrounding areas. I may have not liked it too much at the time, but in retrospect, it was not half bad.

This shot was a surprise to me. I was packing up my gear as the guys were going into the locker room. When I turned around, I saw this and quickly made the move for my camera. I had about 5 seconds to shoot this image (so please excuse the blue cord running through) before he got up .

Some days are tough.

The first snow fall...

...makes me recall the warmer days of fall and summer.



It is snowing for the first time in Chicago. And just now, this week, it is really setting in. Student loans, a downtown apartment, a commute to work, my own Chicago library card. The really harsh reality is that I only spend two days a week shooting after 4 years of preparing for this career. But I suppose two days is better than none. I suppose a byline is better than a blog post. But who knows anymore.

I have been sent out to Naper Settlement for a variety of events. Some have been really execellent for taking photos (the pow wow) and some have been not so great (oktoberfest). The pow wow was neat in that there were a number of people dressed in "traditional" Native American gear. I was tempted to stay and get more formal portraits of some of them, but this was my first assignment of the day.

The other neat thing about Naper Settlement is there is just a slew of volunteers walking around in period clothing. I happened to catch a snap of this woman standing in the cottage.

Surprise!

In my first few times shooting for the Daily Herald, I learned quickly that there is not much communication that goes on between writers and photographers, nor editors and reporters. So when I got to my second shoot on a lovely late summer afternoon to photograph a discarded Hindu statue, little did I know I was going to be wading through brush and water to get there. Thankfully the subject informed me before embarking, and I scrambled through my car to find something that wasn't the dress pants and dress shoes I was wearing.

It all worked out, and the location was really beautiful. The result:

I am so bad at this

I never post because I try to post a lot, but ultimately I don't find the time to edit and upload anything so months go by. Therefore making this blog useless. I am going to try posting a photo at a time and see if that makes this any easier.

I would like to say I got better over the course of the last few months. I went from having absolutely no knowledge of football to having a few photos run fairly large in the Sunday edition.

My internship isn't exactly coming to a close, but my time shooting football has (if I continue to ride out this internship maybe I will move onto basketball next).

I need to get a job.

Working again...
