La Casa

I have been working in this temporary housing for farm workers for the past few weeks. I really enjoy the families that live there.

One of the little girls, Leslie, was first very frightened by the camera and did not warm up to me for a while. But she liked looking at the pictures I took on the display, and now she walks around telling me to take pictures of this and that and of her brother and sister then demands to see the screen.
During the last Images for a Social Dialogue class, we had a guest speaker, Heather Layton, who talked about her work doing Ex vatos and a project she did called (sub)urban homicides. I am particularly fascinated the idea of creating art that requires community involvement. Involving those affected or those that understand the effect of a social issue creates a larger dialogue about the subject than one gallery showing ever could.

I am going to try incorporating this into my farm worker projects, on a smaller scale though. I have been thinking about getting the families involved in my work.

More of my photos from La Casa are on my temporary website.
